Teachers with an Alternative or Initial License

What is an initial teaching license?

An initial license is provided by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) to teachers who have completed an approved teacher preparation program and who meet the specific Colorado license requirements. Generally, teachers hold their initial license for three years before becoming eligible to apply for a professional license from the CDE. For more information or to apply for your initial license, please visit the CDE website.

What is an alternative teaching license?

An alternative license is provided by the Colorado Department of Education to teachers who have a bachelor's degree or higher and have not completed a traditional teacher preparation program. There are multiple pathways to obtain an alternative license. For more information on how to obtain your alternative license, please visit the CDE website.
